Howdy folks. It's the next Acoustic Ballroom this Friday 1st February! Doors open at 8pm for one of the finest open mic nights around! And it's still only £3 on the door (performers go free).
Howdy folks. The Ballroom is moving from it's usual first Friday slot and will be held on Friday 14th December. See you there!
The Acoustic Ballroom presents a fabulous evening of live music right in the centre of Oxford. This free event is part of Oxford's Christmas Light Festival - there's loads of stuff happening across the city. (More info here: https://www.oxfordschristmas.com/)
Our little stage is on Broad Street and features:
4pm - Les Clochards
Les Clochards are Oxford’s musical secret weapon. They sharpened their teeth on a diet of French chansons and Roy Orbison, on which basis they have developed their own repertoire. Their distinctive sound is fronted by male and female vocals, accordion and guitar.
5.15pm - Raymond
A firm favourite at many of Oxford’s open mic nights, Raymond writes and sings tortured country and western songs of loss despair and anguish to get you in the Christmas spirit.
6pm - Simon and Rod
Rod Craig (mandolin and vocals) and Simon Stafford (guitar and vocals) play an infectious blend of the familiar, the obscure and the unfashionable: traditional and contemporary acoustic music played with passion and energy.
7pm - Jodie
Jodie is a London based singer songwriter with a folk/blues sound, and hints of Joni Mitchell and Dusty Springfield. Jodie has travelled and performed in the US for Judy Collins’ record label Wildflower Records, as well as featuring on BBC Introducing.
8pm - La Phooka
La Phooka play original songs & tunes (along with a clutch of covers) ranging from folk-pop, upbeat foot-tapping, dancing-shoes-on numbers through to beautiful ballads and instrumentals. From whistles and bag-pipes to bouzouki and mandolin, from diatonic accordion to all manner of guitars. Multi-part harmony vocals complete the sound.
8.50pm - Band of Hope
The Band of Hope are one of the most moderately successful bands in Wallingford. This year, they've played festivals such as Bunkfest, Wood and Latitude as well as finding themselves on the playlist for Chris Hawkin's morning show on BBC6Music.
Wow. Yesterday's Ballroom was just terrific. A packed room of talented performers, and an attentive and generous audience made it a truly wonderful evening of live music. Here's a few photos.... See you at the next one! (p.s. anyone seen Dave?)
Welcome to the new look Acoustic Ballroom website. Thanks so much to Alex for the fabulous artwork - have a look at some more of his stuff over here:
It's been a bit of a funny old year for the Acoustic Ballroom - a house move, bad weather, and booking issues have all contributed to many of our regular nights being cancelled. The few that have gone ahead though have all been brilliant and that's thanks to you lot - the amazing performers and audience without which there would be no Ballroom.
Anyway, the Ballroom is nearly 13 years old and still going strong. We're back to our regular first Friday of the month spot from 5th October. Following that, we're looking forward to the birthday celebrations on Friday 2nd November. The Christmas Ballroom (sorry to use the C word) is usually a bit later in the month but will be announced in plenty of time here and over in the Facebook group (link below).
So rest assured, the Ballroom is not going anywhere. See you at the next one!
